What is Rising Damp?

  • Rising damp is the common term for the slow upward transmission of moisture molecules in the lower section of walls and other ground-supported structures.
  • Construction materials; brick, stone, mortar, concrete etc are to some extent porous.
    Damp gradually moves upward from the soil through microcapillaries existing in their structure.
  • Evaporating moisture from the wall surface - inside and outside - allows more moisture to be drawn up from below. The cycle continues.

Rising Damp

  • Rising damp can be identified by a characteristic "tide mark" on the lower section of affected walls.
  • This tide mark is caused by soluble salts (particularly nitrates and chlorides) contained in the groundwater.


  • Condensation comes from moist air within your home.
  • Warm air will condense near the cold floor and walls.
  • Water will then find its way into the bricks or  wood which forms your wall.


  • Maintaining underfloor ventilation is an important part of controlling damp.
  • Turn on exhaust fans, particularly when bathing, showering, cooking, doing laundry and drying clothes.
  • Adequate ventilation allows soil moisture to evaporate beneath the floor and pass out through the lower wall vents.

Penetrating Damp

  • Horizontal or penetrating damp can be leaks from pipes and blocked gutters, failed flashings, joints that have lost mortar and general build-up of dirt and mosses on stone or brickwork surfaces.
